England women’s cricket warm up at Loughborough

Five Loughborough cricketers past and present go head to head at the University’s cricket ground tomorrow (Thursday 28 May) when England take on England A in two Twenty20 matches as a warm-up to a busy summer season.

Students Nicky Shaw and Laura Marsh and graduate Lydia Greenway are part of the England team preparing for next month’s Twenty20 World Cup, while University cricket performance manager Alexia Walker captains an England A side that includes student Saliann Briggs as they start a five-match mini series that also sees them play an MCC select and Pakistan.

Walker, who coached the England A side last year before captaining them three times in matches against England, Ireland and South Africa, is looking forward to playing ‘at home’ and facing an up-and-coming international outfit.

“We’ve not played Pakistan before so it’s important for us to go out and beat them,” she said. “As an A side we feel we’re as strong, if not stronger than other full international sides - we have a large pool of talent and a great programme.

“We’ll be playing Twenty20 matches against Pakistan, which we’ve not had as much experience in so it will be good to get some games under our belts.

“To have high profile matches at Loughborough is great, given the University’s impressive reputation for cricket. For five of the girls on Thursday it will effectively be a home match, in an England shirt.”

The England v England A matches take place on Thursday at Loughborough University’s Haslegrave cricket ground at 12pm and 4pm. The England A series continues at Loughborough on Saturday (30 May) against an MCC select from 2pm then moves to Kibworth cricket club from 1-3 June for a trio of fixtures against Pakistan as they prepare for the women’s Twenty20 World Cup.
