Officers in the city are appealing for witnesses following the report of an assault in Hotel Street.

The incident happened close to the junction with Market Street south at around 1am on Saturday May 23, bank holiday weekend. A 29-year-old man was approached from behind and assaulted by a man. The victim fell to the ground and the man walked away.

The victim received injuries to his jaw, which later had required surgery at the Leicester Royal Infirmary.

Detective Constable Peter Davies, the officer investigating the incident, said: Because the assault happened on a Saturday night and it was the bank holiday, it is likely that there are many witnesses to the incident that have not yet contacted us. It is these people that we are appealing to.

If you saw the incident, or know who may be responsible, then we urge you to call us. Any information you have could help us in our investigation.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact PC 1761 Peter Davies on Leicester (0116) 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for a police officer and when prompted key in the officer's identification number 1761. Alternatively contact Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous on 0800 555 111.

* Please note, some mobile phone service providers may charge for this call.
