Get Dirty and Help Nature

Posted on 02/06/09

THE BBCS nationwide Breathing Places project is staging a Dirty Weekend on Saturday and Sunday (June 6th and 7th) and will be visiting a popular Loughborough beauty spot.

Charnwood Borough Council is backing the campaign and people are encouraged to roll up their sleeves, get their hands dirty and do their bit to help maintain the picturesque Outwoods, off Woodhouse Lane.

A series of events are being staged at the Outwoods on Saturday (June 6th) for locals who wish to volunteer their services and play a part in the woodlands management.

Alternatively, anyone is welcome to go along between 10am and 2pm to find out more about the conservation work that is carried out at the Outwoods, watch a charcoal-making demonstration and meet Wilson, the Shire Horse who helps remove timber from the 45-acre site of Special Scientific Interest (SSI)

Some of the work will involve removing Sycamore saplings, which are non-native, invasive species.

Charnwood is one of 40 Breathing Places Communities which has been chosen to host a series of events the year aimed at increasing awareness of wildlife issues.

BBC Radio Leicester will also be broadcasting live from the Outwoods on Friday as part of the initiative.

Mark Graham, Charnwood Borough Councils Wildlife Officer, said: Events like this demonstrate our commitment to conservation and our green spaces.

By supporting this national campaign, we are playing our part in raising awareness of the importance and value of the natural environment.

I hope many people will come along and help out or simply sample the delights of the Outwoods. There will be something for all ages to do in picturesque surroundings.
