A police officer based at Loughborough has been named Leicestershire Constabulary’s Student Officer of the Year 2009.

PC 4616 Suzie Jackson was chosen by a panel of judges including the Assistant Chief Constable, Mike Goodwin, and representatives from the Police Federation and Superintendents Association.  The award recognises the work and effort put in by the best student officers as they progress through their first two years of service and is based on evidence of policing skills such as confidence, resilience, community, customer focus and respect for race and diversity.

Twenty six year old Suzie joined the Force in June 2007 and has been based at Loughborough since she began her training.  She was nominated for the award by her Tutor, PC Chris Hughes.  He said; “Suzie has shown true commitment to the job from the very start of her career and her willingness to take on any task is unbelievable for an officer of her short service.  She shows the mentality and skills of an officer who has been in the job for years and not just a matter of months.

“She is a real team player, very well respected by her shift colleagues and has become a highly regarded member of the Loughborough station.  Most officers who come into contact with Suzie are impressed by her work rate and the amount of positive feedback she receives is brilliant.  She possesses all of the skills and positive attitude to go a long way in the Police Service”.

His comments are endorsed by Sergeant Chris Dickson, the Development Manager of the North Area Professional Development Unit.  He said; “PC Jackson is a very professional and dedicated young police officer who has excelled in both the academic and practical aspects of policing.  Her performance figures for arrests, intelligence logs, victim support and detections for such a young officer is second to none on the area.

“I am not aware of a more complete or better young officer in Leicestershire Constabulary and I believe she deserves the recognition of this award.”

Suzie will be invited to receive the Harris Cup from the Chief Constable in August and will be put forward as the Force’s candidate for the Jane’s Police Review Student Officer of the Year 2009.

PC Dave Grenz, Chair of the Federation Joint Branch Board said; “Suzie is a fine example of the hard working dedicated Police Officers of the Leicestershire Constabulary. She fully deserves the award of Student Officer of the Year and has, no doubt, a fine career ahead of her. The other candidates were also outstanding and the choice of the winner was extremely difficult.”

Suzie said she was shocked when she heard she’d won; “I never even contemplated winning the award because there are so many other excellent student officers so I was blown away when I heard that it was me.  I was very flattered by the things people have said and very surprised.  I joined because I wanted a rewarding, challenging and varied career and being a police officer offers all of those things. I really enjoy my job and the more I go through my training the more I know it is exactly what I want to do.”

The other officers shortlisted for the award are; PC Waheed Suleman Nagdi from the City Centre Local Policing Unit (LPU) and PC Stewart Cross from Blaby LPU.
