Event offering advice on Keeping Your Food Safe - 17 June

Posted on 09/06/09

Charnwood Borough Council will be offering advice to people over 60 on food hygiene during National Food Safety Week which runs from 15th to 21st June 2009.

The Councils Food Team are holding an event at John Storer House, Loughborough on Wednesday 17 June between10.00 am 2.30 pm. This event will focus on the need for correct storage and handling of food in the home.

The reason for focussing on people over 60 is the recent sharp rise in cases of Listeria, a food poisoning bacteria, specifically within this age group. Cases in the over 60s have doubled since 2001 and it causes more deaths each year than Salmonella and E.coli 0157 combined.

Cllr. John Bush (Conservative councillor for Wreake Villages), Lead Member for Housing & Health in Charnwood Borough Council, said: The messages we plan to promote to this audience will centre on making them aware that they are at higher risk from Listeria and providing simple, practical actions that people can do for themselves in order to reduce the risk of contracting Listeriosis including storing food correctly.

In order to deliver the message we will be providing visual displays and discussions, together with food safety information bags.

Information that will be provided include the correct temperature for fridges, following storage instructions provided on the label and using food by its Use-By date as well as explaining the difference between Best Before and Use By.
