Students help police with Download crime prevention message

The winning poster designed by student Rico Buccheri
Students at Stephenson College in Coalville have designed crime prevention posters for the police which will be on display at this year’s Download music festival at Donington Park.
In November 2008, students at the college designed an anti-drugs poster for the police to put up in clubs and pubs and it proved so successful that Inspector Chris Brown, Commander of North West Leicestershire approached them again. This time his brief was to get a message through to rock fans at Download to look after their belongings and leave nothing of value in their tents or cars.
314 crimes were reported to the police during the festival in 2008, which was a small reduction on the year before, but 73 tents were broken into on the first night alone and incidents of theft made up 80% of all crime committed during last year’s festival. This year the festival runs from Friday 12th June to Sunday 14th June but many fans will start arriving from Wednesday 10th June. The arena can hold up to 70,000 people.
Inspector Brown said; “This year we have thought hard about how to get our message through to people who are travelling from all over the country to Castle Donington. We thought it was a good idea to ask young people to design a crime prevention poster aimed at people in their age group. The organisers of Download have kindly agreed to print the best four posters and put them up around Donington Park.
“The key message is designed to encourage people to be careful about their personal belongings such as cash, wallets and mobile phones.”
11 first year BTEC National Diploma Art & Design students took part in the project and four of the best were chosen to go into print. The overall winner was Rico Buccheri who was rewarded with 2 tickets to the Download Festival.
The Head of the Art and Design Department at Stephenson College, Dan Liddicott, said; “We pride ourselves in providing a high standard of teaching that really does prepare students to work in their chosen career. Once again our students have shown that they can do just that, by working with real clients in producing professional level design work to meet real needs. We were delighted when we were once again approached by Inspector Brown to get involved in an important crime prevention project and it has been a rewarding experience for all students involved.”
The top four winning posters were designed by;
1. Rico Buccheri designed the “Hands Off” and “Lock It” posters.
2. Nadia McDowell designed the “Want to come back to an empty tent” poster.
3. Derek Cooper designed the “Look after your valuables” poster.
For the first time the police are also using Facebook to send out crime prevention messages to rock fans all over the country and the response has been very positive with more than 700 ‘friends,’ so far. Log onto Facebook and search for ‘Leicestershire Police and Download.”
