Greed and Wealth in the 18th Century Art World

Posted on 10/06/09
University of Leicester

The extraordinary trade in Italian art and antiquities during the 18th century will be the subject of a study day run by the University of Leicester's Centre for the Study of the Country House at Lamport Hall, Northamptonshire, on 16th June. The study day is open to the public.

The cast of characters will include Italian noblemen down on their luck, greedy and unscrupulous art dealers and enormously wealthy Englishmen who bought statues and pictures for various reasons, only one of which was their love of art.

Also featured will be the influx of Italian artists, such as Canaletto, lured to England by the promise of patronage and wealth.

The day, entitled Collecting Italian Art (and Artists) in Eighteenth-Century Britain will comprise three lectures by Dr Brendan Cassidy, Reader in History of Art at the University of St Andrews and formerly Director of the Index of Christian Art at Princeton University.

His latest book, currently in press, is entitled Gavin Hamilton (1723-98): Artist Antiquarian and Art Dealer in Eighteenth-Century Rome and includes the correspondence of this pivotal figure of the Grand Tour. The letters throw light on the attitudes and behaviour of British tourists and the cultural and social life in Italy at the time.

Dr Phillip Lindley, Director of the Centre for the Study of the Country House, commented: The eighteenth century was the great age of the Grand Tour. Many wealthy Britons converged on Italy to experience at first hand the land and the monuments they had read about in Horace and Vergil and to see the works of the great Renaissance and Baroque masters. They developed a taste for Italian paintings and antique sculptures and competition for the choicest works was fierce.
