Distraction burglary in Castle Donington
Police are appealing for witnesses after a distraction burglary in Castle Donington.
The incident happened at around 1.15pm on Saturday, June 6 in Bosworth Road when the suspect knocked on the back door of the victims home and said he was a door to door salesman.
The 75-year-old victim went to collect her handbag and paid the suspect, who then asked if he could use the toilet.
Once he had left the suspect had left the victim discovered a quantity of cash had been taken from her purse.
The suspect is described as white, around 55 tall and of slim build in his 20s. He had short brown thick hair, a local accent and was carrying a large black bag full of kitchenware items.
PC Matt Garside, who is investigating the incident said: We would like to speak to anyone who recalls seeing a man matching the description acting suspiciously in the area. We'd also be keen to speak to anyone else in the area who had a visit from someone using a similar story.
Distraction burglars, or bogus callers, will try to mislead you or distract your attention to get into your home and steal your money or valuables.
You should ask anyone who knocks on your back door to go to the front so you can use a door chain or spy hole to help check who the caller is before opening. They should be able to produce an official identity card which you can verify with the company they say they are from.
A genuine caller will not mind you checking their ID and most will be happy to make an appointment to return at a later date or time.
Anyone with information is asked to call PC 2854 Matt Garside on 0116 222 2222 and follow the instructions to leave a message for an officer. When prompted key in his identification number 2854. Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous on 0800 555 111.
*Please note, some mobile phone providers may charge for this call.
