Police are appealing for witnesses following a distraction burglary at an address on Pleasant Place in Kegworth.

The incident happened at about 4pm on Wednesday June 10, 2009 when the suspect knocked on the victim’s front door and said he was selling cleaning items.

The victim, a man in his 80s, agreed to purchase a couple of dusters and went inside to look for his wallet. When he returned to the lounge he found the man stood there.

Once the suspect had left, the victim discovered that his wallet, which contained a quantity of cash, had been stolen.

The suspect is described as white, aged 25 to 30 years-old, about 5’ 10” tall and of medium build. He was wearing sports type clothing and was carrying a holdall.

He is believed to have visited other properties in the area but didn’t gain entry or steal any other property.

DC Paul Davies, who is investigating the incident, said: “I would like to speak to anyone who remembers seeing a man matching the description acting suspiciously in the area. I’m also keen to speak to anybody who had a visit from someone using a similar story.

“Distraction burglars, or bogus callers, will try to mislead you or distract your attention to get into your home and steal your money or valuables.

“You should try to use a door chain or spy hole to help check who the caller is before opening. They should also be able to produce an official identity card which you can verify with the company that they say they're from.

“A genuine caller will not mind you checking their ID and most will be happy to make an appointment to return at a later date or time.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact DC 291 Paul Davies on Leicester (0116) 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for a police officer and when prompted key in the officer's identification number 0291. Alternatively contact Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous on 0800 555 111.
