Widening participation event for would-be medical students
Posted on 18/06/09
University of Leicester
Medical students at the University of Leicester are running an event on Saturday 20th June, as part of a Widening Participation initiative, aimed at school students who might be disadvantaged in their applications to become medical students at university.
The project is called SAMPLE medicine (Student Access into Medical careers through Peer Led Education) and it aims to cater for students who may struggle to gain medically related work experience and hence may be disadvantaged when applying to medical school.
The event is for AS/A2 level sixth form students across Leicestershire who come from a non-professional, comprehensive schooling background. The aim is to enable them to make an informed choice about studying medicine as well as give them a rich experience to discuss in their applications.
Final-year medical student and project director Lopa Patel commented: We realised that many students, including ourselves at the time we applied, found getting medically related work experience very difficult. Other students with medical connections (such as parents who were health professionals or those who were health graduates prior to studying medicine) obviously had a great advantage.
With our previous work with sixth formers, many had reported that the paper application was simpler than the actual interview and a bad interview was often the reason why students hadn't got a place.
This is a national issue affecting medical schools. Leicester medical school is taking a unique and positive approach by supporting this project fully in terms of funding, equipment and training.
Her fellow project director, Mohamed Mohamed, explained: To counter the inequalities we thought it would be essential and fair if such students could attend our programme, which aims to provide them with the skills and experiences they need, giving them an equal chance during the application process.
We have devised a day of events which will give them a range of experiences to boost their applications and interviews, including lectures, practical demonstrations and group work and learning about effective communication skills through video demonstrations.
The best part of the day offers a range of practical sessions, such as taking blood, gaining intravenous access, putting in feeding tubes and measuring blood pressure, all practised on models.
The event coincides with the Medical School Open day on Saturday 20th June 2009 and the students on the SAMPLE Medicine project will also hear talks from the open day, including how to write an effective UCAS statement.
Currently 60 students are signed onto the programme from ten 6th Form colleges.
It has been organised by final-year medical students Lopa Patel and Mohamed Mohamed, who have a keen interest in Medical Teaching and Peer Education. The event is part of their wider Peer Led Education Programme (PLEP) which aims to provide medical teaching experience for medical students through various events and projects. The aim is to run this particular event every year for potential medical student applicants.
They already have extensive experience in teaching students in both the Leicester Medical School and throughout the later years of their college education, and through this experience had come to realise the need for such a project communicated to students by students.
The inspiration for the project came from students they have worked with, medical colleagues and from their own personal experiences.
Lopa added: The event has taken a year to organize. We have 11 tutors who are medical students ranging from first year to final year of study and we have all received training on how to teach effectively, including lesson plans, effective tools for delivering teaching, how to keep students engaged during teaching, teaching difficult topics and testing knowledge gained.
Mohamed said: Clearly this event promises to be a great success. It is the first of its kind to have been offered to students, and really is a positive step towards widening participation from non-traditional backgrounds into professional careers.
In keeping with the widening participation theme, the event is offered totally free of charge and run by an extensive team of volunteers who have committed a great deal of their own time and effort ensuring this is a success. We would like to add a special thank you to Professor Petersen and Anne Peppitt for their much valued time and support for this event.
Professor Stewart Petersen, Head of Medical Education said: We are very pleased to support this important initiative. It is so good to see out students working to improve access to medical education for students in local schools.
