Cycle safety advice for school children in Beaumont Leys

Officers hand out cycle safety packs to pupils at Wolsey Primary
Over 250 bicycle crime prevention packs have been handed out by police to school children in the Beaumont Leys area as part of National Bike Week.
The packs - which include a cycle lock, ultraviolet pen, safety card and crime prevention leaflet – have been distributed at Alderman Richard Hallam, Wolsey, Glebelands and Beaumont Lodge Primary Schools. They have been given to children who either regularly cycle to school or have passed their cycling proficiency test.
PCSO Anne Timlock gave a cycle safety talk to years 5 and 6 pupils at Wolsey Primary School before handing out the packs. She said: “National Bike Week is all about promoting the benefits of cycling. We encourage young people to cycle to and from school but we want them to do it safely and responsibly. We also want them to think about the security of their bike and hope that the free locks we have handed out reduce the risk of their bikes being stolen.
“We regularly visit schools in the area but this has given us another opportunity to engage with local school children and the reaction from them has been great.”
11-year-old Charlie cycles to Wolsey Primary School every day. She said: “I’ve taken my cycling proficiency test and I feel a bit more confident now. The talk from the police officers was really helpful because they told us how to stay safe on the roads.”
Assistant head teacher Steve Powell added: “There are lots of benefits to cycling and we really encourage the children to cycle to school if they can. However, the main reason many of them don’t is because they haven’t got a lock for their bike. They were all very excited to receive a free cycle lock from the police and we hope to see more of them cycling to school in the future.”
The cycle locks and ultraviolet pens have been funded by the Beaumont Leys Joint Action Group which consists of residents, retailers, the police and other local agencies.
