Cabinet considers Special Olympics support

A request to support the Special Olympics will be considered by Leicestershire’s ruling Cabinet.

Leicestershire County Council has been asked to contribute towards the costs of staging the Special Olympics in Leicester, from July 25 – 31, due to a £1 million shortfall.

The request has come from the chair of the Special Olympics Board and the leader of Leicester City Council, as the games receives no Government funding and has had difficulty raising sponsorship towards its £2.9 million costs, due to the recession.

ITV has pledged to cover the games, which will include 21 sports at 16 venues and feature 2,700 athletes. Supporters of the games claim it will boost the city and county’s profile and local tourism, due to TV coverage and 10,000 visitors.

If the Cabinet decides to make a contribution, the exact amount will be decided following further discussions with the City Council and other funding partners.

The Cabinet meets at 2.30pm on June 29 to consider the issue.
