Cabinet advised on care home situation
Posted on 22/06/2009
Cabinet Office
Leicestershire’s ruling Cabinet is being advised that a consortium seeking to buy six County Council care homes has withdrawn its bid, due to the recession.
Last year, the Council agreed to sell six elderly people’s homes, plus the Silverdale hostel site in Melton, to help fund the development of better services for older people in the future.
The six homes were Catherine Dalley House in Melton, Hadrian House in Thurmaston, Huntingdon Court in Loughborough, Harvey House in Barwell, Kirby House in Kirby Muxloe and Woodmarket House in Lutterworth. Existing residents and staff would have been able to remain there.
The prospective purchaser was a not-for-profit consortium, made up of WCS Care Group Ltd and Housing Solutions Limited. The sale was due to be completed last December.
However, due to the recession, contract discussions have taken longer than expected and the consortium has now withdrawn its bid.
The Council’s officers are now advising the Cabinet to consider further options and to continue running the homes in the meantime.
David Sprason, Cabinet member for Adult Social Care and Health, said: “All parties have been trying to find ways to ensure the benefits could be delivered, but, due to the current financial climate forcing the consortium to withdraw, council officers are advising us that we cannot proceed and need to reassess our options. We will continue to put the needs of residents first.”
The Cabinet will discuss the situation at 2.30pm on June 29.
