School children perform at the Curve

Talented school children across Leicester and Leicestershire are treading the boards at the city’s Curve Theatre this week.

Leicester-Shire Arts in Education’s first Schools and Youth Festival Week is in full flow and has already seen scores of youngsters take to the stage.

On Wednesday (June 24), budding stars from seven schools impressed audiences with a performance of a colourful production called Puppets and Parades.

Children from Ashby Hill Top Primary School, Battling Brook Community Primary School, Glebelands Primary School, Humberstone Junior School, Linden Primary School, Outwoods Edge Community Primary School & Thomas Estley Community College all helped put on the show.

On Friday (June 26) seven more schools will perfom the classic Greek quest, Jason and the Argonauts.

Children from Heatherbrook Primary School, Judgemeadow Community College, Church Langton C.E. Primary School,  Launde Primary School, Millfield Community Primary School, Rothley C.E. Primary School, John Ferneley High School hope to wow the audience with their portrayal of Jason battling harpies, clashing rocks, fire breathing balls, skeleton soldiers and serpents.

Performances will take place at 1.15pm and 7pm.

The festival will finish with a showcase of the wide range of Leicester-Shire Arts in Education’s Youth Dance and Theatre groups on Saturday.

A total of 200 children will take part. The performance is also part of U.Dance – a new national programme which aims to provide every child and young person with the opportunity to take part in a dance performance each year.

An open dress rehearsal will take place at 5.45pm, with an evening performance kicking off at 8pm.

Ivan Ould, Leicestershire County Council Cabinet member for the Children and Young People’s Service, said: “The performances are an opportunity for a new generation of children and young people to experience the excitement and pride of performing on a professional stage.

“We hope that it will also help to create in them a life-long enjoyment and interest in live theatre.”
