Talented school children across Leicester and Leicestershire are treading the boards at the citys Curve Theatre this week.

Leicester-Shire Arts in Educations first Schools and Youth Festival Week is in full flow and has already seen scores of youngsters take to the stage.

On Wednesday (June 24), budding stars from seven schools impressed audiences with a performance of a colourful production called Puppets and Parades.

Children from Ashby Hill Top Primary School, Battling Brook Community Primary School, Glebelands Primary School, Humberstone Junior School, Linden Primary School, Outwoods Edge Community Primary School & Thomas Estley Community College all helped put on the show.

On Friday (June 26) seven more schools will perfom the classic Greek quest, Jason and the Argonauts.

Children from Heatherbrook Primary School, Judgemeadow Community College, Church Langton C.E. Primary School, Launde Primary School, Millfield Community Primary School, Rothley C.E. Primary School, John Ferneley High School hope to wow the audience with their portrayal of Jason battling harpies, clashing rocks, fire breathing balls, skeleton soldiers and serpents.

Performances will take place at 1.15pm and 7pm.

The festival will finish with a showcase of the wide range of Leicester-Shire Arts in Educations Youth Dance and Theatre groups on Saturday.

A total of 200 children will take part. The performance is also part of U.Dance a new national programme which aims to provide every child and young person with the opportunity to take part in a dance performance each year.

An open dress rehearsal will take place at 5.45pm, with an evening performance kicking off at 8pm.

Ivan Ould, Leicestershire County Council Cabinet member for the Children and Young Peoples Service, said: The performances are an opportunity for a new generation of children and young people to experience the excitement and pride of performing on a professional stage.

We hope that it will also help to create in them a life-long enjoyment and interest in live theatre.

For more information about the performances call head of performance at Leicester-Shire Arts in Education Kate Hutchon on 0116 2700850 or email chutchon@leics.gov.uk .

ENDS

Leicester-Shire Arts in Educations is delighted to be able to use Curve Theatre to continue the long tradition of festivals that have taken place since 1973, bringing together schools in Leicestershire and Leicester to celebrate and share high quality performance work in dance and drama.

Funding for the Curve Festival performances has been provided from Leicester-Shire Find Your Talent Pathfinder.

Additional sponsorship was provided by the Leicestershire Branch of the NASUWT for the schools matines.
