Partnership Approach to End of Term Student Exodus

Posted on 26/06/09

Student Tidy Up

It is the end of the academic year and Loughborough University students are moving out for the summer. But before they do, 29 tons of waste and 100 separate items of electric items have been successfully disposed of.

Last Saturday Charnwood Borough Council joined forces with the university, college, students union, police and local residents to tackle some of the issues raised by the high concentration of students in Loughborough, one of the issues being rubbish.

The Councils Environmental Services Team, together with local residents, the students union and the university wardens, ensured that the extra rubbish created from the students exodus for the summer does not remain a concern for the remaining residents.

It was a full day campaign in the areas of high concentrations of student properties including Storer and Ashby Roads.

In true term time style, as the refuse vehicles pulled up, a school bell was rung to alert students and remind them to bring their rubbish out to the waiting vehicles.

Cllr. Preston, Leader of Charnwood Borough Council, said: The day was a tremendous

success with a considerable quantity of rubbish and electrical items being carefully cleared away. Every year we have made progress in dealing with rubbish at the end of term and this was the most effective collection yet. We are all working together to ensure a much tidier future.

Russ Bowman on behalf of SARG (Storer and Ashby Area Residents Group) said:

SARG members express their wholehearted appreciation of the work done last Saturday in clearing Storer and Burleigh of rubbish following the departure of students. This was the best collection of rubbish that we have had, and the scheme has been running for five years! We believe that the operation was very worthwhile and feel happy that a job has been very well done.

Adrian Bailey, Loughborough Universitys community warden for the Storer and Burleigh areas, commented: This was the fifth year that an event like this has taken place and it was an amazing day, the biggest and best yet and a real team effort. There was great energy and good humour by all involved, especially the operators of the vehicles and thanks are due to all involved, particularly St Peters Community Centre for once again allowing their car park to be used for this event.
