Schools invited to celebrate British sculpture with the University of Leicester

Local schools have the chance to take an active part in the University of Leicesters annual outdoor sculpture show in the scenic Harold Martin Botanic Garden at Oadby.

This is the eighth year the University has hosted this summer sculpture exhibition, which this year is Celebrating British Sculpture.

The schools will be following a two-part Sculpture programme, devised by the education team at the Botanic Garden.

During the first part of the programme the youngsters will spend time visiting each sculpture in the exhibition and will be encouraged to explore them and perhaps choose a favourite, before making a clay model of their own, inspired by what they have seen.

The second part of the programme involves collecting natural materials from all over the Gardens (such as leaves, petals, twigs, etc.) and then working in groups to produce a 2D representation on one of the lawns.

Botanic Gardens Education Officer, Janice Hodgkinson commented: This can be a pattern or a picture, or whatever takes their fancy. Before beginning this activity, they are introduced to work done by the artist Andy Goldsworthy, who excels in this art form.

In addition, students from English Martyrs School and its four feeder primaries, Bishop Ellis, Holy Cross, Christ the King and St Patricks, will be exhibiting their work inspired by the Fibonacci number series following a Come Alive with Science project conducted in partnership with the Botanic Garden.

The exhibition,Celebration of British Sculpture, includes 50 works of art in varying media, scale and design, much of it by artists of international acclaim.

Among the highlights of the show will be works by the late Lynn Chadwick, one of the twelve semi-finalists for the Unknown Political Prisoner International Sculpture Competition in 1953 and winner of the International Prize for Sculpture at the 1956 Venice Biennale. Also featured is work by Jon Buck, Charlotte Mayer, Ralph Brown and Sokari Douglas Camp, CBE, who has been shortlisted for the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square.

The grand opening of the exhibition will be at the Botanic Gardens Open Day on Sunday 28th June, 11.00am to 5.00pm. The Open Day includes, not only the sculpture exhibition, but also a plant sale and displays and activities of interest to all the family.

Entrance is 3 per adult, children free. The sculpture exhibition closes on Sunday 27th September and, apart from Open Days, is free of charge. The Botanic Garden is open every day over the summer between 10.00am and 4.00pm
