Officers are appealing for information in relation to a distraction burglary at an address on Arnesby Crescent in Leicester.

The incident happened at about 2.30pm on Thursday April 24, 2009 when a woman knocked on the victim’s door and asked to use the toilet.

When the victim, a man in his 80’s, refused, the woman ducked under his arm and entered the house. He later discovered that a small quantity of cash had been stolen.

Following this incident, officers have conducted house to house enquiries in the area and distributed leaflets to residents providing crime prevention advice and appealing for information.

A 35-year-old woman arrested in connection with the incident has since been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

PC Deborah Smyth, who is investigating this incident, said: “From our enquiries we know that a woman using a similar story has visited other addresses in the area, asking residents to phone her a taxi or if she can use their toilet.

“I would appeal to anybody who has been visited by a woman using this story in the last few months to contact police, if you haven’t done so already.

“If anyone has witnessed any incidents like this or knows of a woman acting suspiciously in the area, calling at addresses or peering through windows at any time in the last six months, I would like to hear from you, regardless of how insignificant you think the information may be.

"I would also like to remind residents that you do not have to let someone into your home that you do not know. If you think they are suspicious, do not be afraid to refuse them entry and call the police on 999.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact PC 4572 Deborah Smyth on Leicester (0116) 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for a police officer and when prompted key in the officer's identification number 4572. Alternatively contact Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous on 0800 555 111.
