Distraction burglary on Kashmir Road
Officers are appealing for witnesses following a distraction burglary at a home on Kashmir Road.
The incident happened at around 1.30pm on Wednesday June 16, 2009 when the elderly victim, in her eighties, was leaving her property through her front door and was approached by a man asking what work she had done at the house.
The woman believed the man to be a genuine council worker and let him into her house.
He asked the woman if she kept any money and jewellery in the house and looked in various rooms in the house with her. When he left a short while later, she discovered a quantity of cash and five gold rings had been taken.
The suspect is described as white, aged in his late thirties to forties, of a stocky build and between 54 and 56 tall. He had light brown hair which was receding, stubble and spoke with a local accent. He was wearing a brown leather jacket. .
Detective Constable Steve Hadden, who is investigating this incident, said: "This incident has left the victim extremely angry that she was tricked by this man.
I am appealing for anyone who saw this man in the Kashmir Road area at the time of the incident or remembers any suspicious activity to urgently get in touch with us. If anyone received a visit from someone in similar circumstances we would be interested in hearing from them.
"I would urge residents to be vigilant when strangers knock on their doors. Check the ID of any workmen and don't be afraid to close doors on visitors while you verify their details."
Anyone with any information is asked to contact DC 906 Steve Hadden on 0116 2222222, follow the instructions to leave a message for a police officer and when prompted key in the officer's identification number 0906. Alternatively contact Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous on 0800 555 111.
