International experts on fish biology are converging on the University of Leicester for a conference on the role of the stickleback in the development of evolutionary theory.

The 6th International Conference on Stickleback Behaviour and Evolution will be hosted by the University of Leicester on 13th 17th July, honouring the 150th anniversary of the publication of Charles Darwins seminal book, The Origin of Species and the 200th anniversary of his birth.

The summer symposium of the Fisheries Society of the British Isles will explore the role of stickleback research in the development of Darwins theories regarding the process of natural selection, with nearly 100 delegates attending from 14 different countries including the US, Canada, several European countries and Japan.

Research on the freshwater fish has been crucial to aiding understanding of diverse aspects of living systems, with speakers highlighting how such research contributes to the natural selection process at the foundation of evolutionary biology.

Professor Paul Hart, Head of Biology at the University, said: Sticklebacks are now used widely to tackle fundamental questions in evolution and development. There will be 60 papers presented as talks and the 31 poster papers delivered during the symposium, with Professor Hart noting, The threespine stickleback is the most widely studied species but there will also be talks on the ninespined and other stickleback species.

University of Leicester Vice-Chancellor, Professor Robert Burgess, will open the conference which takes place in the Bennett Link building with delegates staying at the Universitys Oadby student village site. The first evenings reception will be sponsored by Heartland Wines of Australia who, rather aptly, produce a brand of red and white wine called Stickleback.

The opening Keynote paper is by Bob Wootton of Aberystwyth University. Through his books and papers, he has been one of the founding fathers of stickleback studies and has inspired many people to use the species for their work. This lecture is also the Jack Jones Memorial Lecture, named after the founding president of the Fisheries Society of the British Isles, which is the main sponsor for the meeting. There are six other keynote papers with speakers from the USA, Canada, Finland and again the UK.

The current President of the Fisheries Society is Professor Felicity Huntingford from the University of Glasgow and she is also one of the keynote speakers.

The meeting will also be attended by the current President of the American Fisheries Society, Dr Bill Franzin. This is part of an exchange the FSBI has with the AFS.

The detailed organisation of the meeting has been executed by Tricia Ellis Evans of Pace Projects, Cambridge under the guidance of the organizing committee composed of University of Leicester staff Paul Hart and Iain Barber (Biology), Ezio Rosato (Genetics) and Mark Purnell (Geology) and Andrew MacColl (Biological Sciences, University of Nottingham).

Apart from the FSBI, the meeting is also sponsored by Wiley-Blackwell Publishers, CRC Press, the University of Leicester and Heartland Wines of Australia.
