Go ahead for safety improvements

A £230,000 scheme to improve road safety at the busy A511 Stephenson Way / Broom Leys Road junction in Coalville has been approved for construction.

The scheme has been developed following a study that confirmed that the majority of accidents involved right turning vehicles. In a three year period, eight out of the ten recorded accidents involved this manoeuvre.

The scheme will also improve traffic flow through the junction and includes better facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.

Lesley Pendleton, Cabinet member for Highways and Transportation at Leicestershire County Council, said: “The improvements should reduce the number of accidents at the junction and encourage more people to walk and cycle.”

The main construction work is due to begin this autumn and will last for around 12 weeks. Some advance works to divert services such as BT will be undertaken during the school summer holidays.

Temporary traffic management arrangements will be introduced for the duration of the works to protect both the public and the workforce. There will be some disruption, but this will be kept to a minimum.
