A man has today been sentenced to 11 years imprisonment after an assault and firearm offences.

Sean Alex Declan Waldron (27) of Littlemead, Leicester, pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm and class A drugs and was found guilty of GBH at a trial in March. He received six years for the assault and five for the possession of a firearm to run consecutively.

He also received 12 months imprisonment for possession of class A drugs and 18 months for possession of ammunition. These are to run concurrently.

The GBH charge relates to a nasty assault on a 25-year-old man at an address on Grove Road in Leicester. The assault happened in February 2008 when, following a disagreement, Waldron assaulted the man with a knife, leaving a 4-inch scar on his face and he is missing part of his ear

The firearm was identified by police officers on 19 October 2008 during a routine stop of a Volvo in which Waldron was the passenger. Officers had suspicions about the vehicle and followed it through Leicester city centre before stopping it at Abbey Park.

A search of the vehicle found a 9mm self loading pistol hidden under the passenger seat. Both the driver and Waldron were arrested but all the forensic evidence pointed to Waldron.

Detective Sergeant Nicole Main, one of the officers involved in the investigation, said: “Waldron was warned by the judge to expect a considerable sentence and that is exactly what he got today.

“Those officers involved in the police stop who used their training and judgement to identify the Volvo can take great credit from today’s result, as can those involved in the forensics and everyone who played a part in all investigations.

“Certainly I’m sure the people of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland can be reassured that Waldron’s behind bars. But crucially this sends out another equally strong message to anyone involved in violent crime or criminality. This is the kind of thorough, determined policing they can expect from Leicestershire Constabulary and these are the kinds of sentences they can expect from the courts. We will continue to work hard to reduce violent crime, deter gun crime and to bring those responsible to justice.
