A total of 596 motorists in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland were breathalysed by police in June as part of the Summer Drink and Drug Drive Campaign.

The results, which have just been collated, reveal that 15 per cent of those – a total of 90 motorists – were found to be driving under the influence of alcohol. One further motorist refused to provide a breath sample for police.

All 91 drivers now face a minimum 12 months driving ban and a fine of up to £5,000.

Inspector Vivienne Brenchley from Leicestershire Constabulary’s Roads Policing Unit said: “I hope this serves as a warning to others who think that they can drink and drive and get away with it.

“Only 235 breath tests were carried out by officers following collisions. The remaining amount were carried out as a result of officers proactively stopping motorists either on suspicion of traffic offences or because their driving lead officers to believe that they may under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

“It is also very disappointing to see that nearly a third of the drivers arrested – a total of 29 – are under the age of 25. Not only does this age group feature heavily in drink drive statistics but also in the numbers of those killed and seriously injured on our roads.

“The summer campaign has now officially concluded, but officers across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland remain committed to reducing drink driving and making our roads a safer place.

“Remember – a drink drive conviction will not only cost you your licence and a hefty fine, but it could also cost you your freedom, your job and affect your future career prospects. Is it really worth it?”

Throughout the campaign - which ran from June 1 to June 30, 2009 - officers breathalysed motorists around the clock.  A total of 58 drivers were arrested between 10pm and 4am, however 11 were arrested between 12 noon and 8pm.
