lanting schemes get grant boost

Town and country p

Lutterworth’s Memorial Gardens and Ullesthorpe Playing Field are both set to receive £10,000 from Leicestershire County Council’s SHIRE Environmental Improvement Grant.

The re-landcaping of the memorial gardens at the corner of George Street and Church Street will include new paths, seats, railings and ornamental plants.

The £65,000 scheme will also involve the relocation of a bust of Sir Frank Whittle, inventor of the jet engine, into a more appropriate setting,

The new look was designed by the County Council’s landscape architects who aimed to create a relaxing space where people can contemplate, remember or just sit and watch the world go by.

Ullesthorpe Playing Field will benefit from a new path linking through the field to the sports pavilion, as well as a patio area at the pavilion.

The £24,000 scheme will also include the planting of native trees, shrubs and wildlfowers at the boundary of the site. A new hedge will also, in time, act as a windbreak for the playing field.

Ernie White, Cabinet Lead Member for Better Places at Leicestershire County Council, said: "The two schemes help to demonstrate just how flexible the SHIRE Grant is. It can help deliver both rural and town centre improvement projects across the county"
