Distraction burglary in Nether Broughton
Police are appealing for witnesses following a distraction burglary at an address in the Nether Broughton area.
The incident happened at about 10am on Monday July 20, 2009 in the area near to Middle Lane when the suspect entered the house from a side door, stating that he was in the area to work on nearby sewers.
He said he needed to check the drains at the address.
The victim, a woman in her 80’s, showed the man to the back garden. He talked to the woman for about 10 minutes before leaving the property and walking off in the direction of Chapel Lane.
Once the suspect had left, the victim discovered asecond person had been inside her home and a quantity of cash had been stolen.
The suspect is described as white, about 5’10” tall, of medium build, clean shaven, with short dark hair and aged between 30 and 45-years-old.
PC James Hurst, who is investigating the incident, said: “I would like to speak to anyone who remembers seeing a man matching the description acting suspiciously in the area. I’m also keen to speak to anybody who had a visit from someone using a similar story recently.
“Distraction burglars, or bogus callers, will try to mislead you or distract your attention to get into your home and steal your money or valuables.
“You should try to use a door chain or spy hole to help check who the caller is before opening. They should also be able to produce an official identity card which you can verify with the company that they say they're from.
“A genuine caller will not mind you checking their ID and most will be happy to make an appointment to return at a later date or time.”
Anyone with any information is asked to contact PC 2201 James Hirst on Leicester (0116) 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for a police officer and when prompted key in the officer's identification number 2201. Alternatively contact Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous on 0800 555 111.
