Top-notch progress revealed in report
Posted on 22/07/2009
Cabinet Office
Top-notch exam results and a dip in bullying rates are among many successes captured in a new report.
Record Ofsted results, child protection and low re-offending rates are also highlighted in the review which is being discussed by the County Council's Cabinet next week.
Comparing the progress of different services working with Leicestershire's children and young people against ambitious targets, the report reveals that major steps have been taken in the areas below:
• Attainment remains high compared to national and similar local authorities with GCSEs continuing to improve at a faster rate than nationally
• OFSTED judge around seven out of 10 Leicestershire schools to be “Good” or "Outstanding”
• High immunisation rates for children
• Children and young people are taking part in more sport and PE
• Rates of school attendance remain high
• Rates of bullying in schools have gone down
• Targets for reviewing children in care and child protection cases are being met
• Independent assessment judges Leicestershire to be “outstanding” for involving children and young people
• Leicestershire young people’s offending and re-offending, already amongst the lowest, continue to reduce
• Less than one in 21 young people in Leicestershire are not in education, employment or learning
Ivan Ould, Cabinet member for the Children and Young People's Service, said: "I'd like to pass on my congratulations to all our staff, pupils and governors for these very pleasing achievements.
"However, we remain determined to meet future challenges and improve services further. We will continue to improve support for children in care and develop support for parents and carers, especially, for those with disabled children."
The Children and Young People's Plan 2008-11 will be discussed by the County Council's Cabinet next Tuesday (28th July).
