During the evening of July 21, 2009 representatives from Police, and Trading Standards carried out a test purchase operation at 12 off licences throughout the borough.

Four of the off licences visited were found to be selling alcohol to underage persons. These off licenses will now be dealt with by the licensing department at Oadby & Wigston Borough Council and police.

Citizen Focus Sergeant Gavin Drummond of Oadby & Wigston local policing unit said, “We’ve long known that the sale of alcohol to minors can be a barrier to children and young people enjoying themselves and participating in positive activities of the summer months.

“We are keen to hear of establishments which profit from the sale of alcohol to under 18s. It is important that stores take responsibility for the impact they have when they sell alcohol illegally.

“I’m please to see many stores and supermarkets operating a self-imposed ‘look 25’ policy, where people without the correct identity documents must appear much older to be served alcoholic drinks.”

Anyone with information about the sale of alcohol to children and young people in the area can contact Oadby and Wigston local policing unit on 0116 222 2222. Alternatively call Crimestoppers which is free* and anonymous on 0800 555 111.
