Distraction burglary in Melton
Police are appealing for witnesses after a distraction burglary at a house in Melton Mowbray.
The incident happened in Sherwood Drive area of the town between 8.30am and 12.30pm on Wednesday, July 8 when the victim, who is in her 80s, answered her door to the suspect.
He entered her property and sold her some cleaning items, before leaving the room and returning with another man.
They both then left the house and a short while later the victim discovered an untidy search had been carried out and the cleaning products she had bought had gone. Nothing else was taken in the incident.
The first suspect is described as white, around 40 -years-old, of medium build and was wearing blue jeans and a hat.
The second suspect is described as white and of medium build.
PC Sam Stevens, who is investigating the incident said: “We would like to speak to anyone who had a similar call at their house and thinks they may have been targeted by these people.
“It is possible that they knocked on other doors in the area before finding someone who would let them in.
“Distraction burglars, or bogus callers, will try to mislead you or distract your attention to get into your home and steal your money or valuables.
“You should try to use a door chain or spy hole to help check who the caller is before opening. They should also be able to produce an official identity card which you can verify with the company that they say they're from.
“A genuine caller will not mind you checking their ID and most will be happy to make an appointment to return at a later date or time.”
Anyone with any information is asked to contact PC 4411 Sam Stevens on Leicester (0116) 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for a police officer and when prompted key in the officer's identification number 4411. Alternatively contact Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous on 0800 555 111.
