Industry focus for university visit

University of Leicester

Anna Cummins Head of Regional Implementation, DBIS (Department of Business, Innovation and Skills) visited the University of Leicester as part of her Week in industry secondment. The University of Leicester was only one of two universities Anna visited during her week out.

Ms Cummins explained that she was particularly interested in visiting the East Midlands to learn firsthand about the practical initiatives in the region and how the university addresses the regional knowledge transfer agenda.

Her visit was organised by Ms Anjuu Trevedi, Head of Regional Business Engagement in the Enterprise and Business Development office in the University of Leicester.

She was given an overview of the Universitys third stream agenda and learned about one of the Universitys successful spin out companies, TTE Systems working in utilising embedded systems expertise. Ms Cummins also gained greater understanding into five regionally funded business facing programmes which included G-STEP, Ionics Liquid, RAFT, Biobator and Innovation Partnerships project.

Anjuu Trevedi said I was very happy to be given an opportunity to showcase the University of Leicesters expertise. I believe we have a lot to be proud at the University of Leicester with so many projects delivering real benefits to the regions businesses. We have interesting and unique insights into business needs and what works. I hope this first visit leads to greater interactions and engagements with regional, national and international policy decision makers.

Anjuu said the visit was important because we have made the first inroads into the newly created Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. We have showcased our business facing projects and activities. Anna now has greater understanding on how we translate research expertise/excellence into business solutions at the University of Leicester and we have given clear message to government on the types of funding and support packages that works and those that dont.

We hope that this first engagement will lead to further conversations with the newly created DBIS. Hopefully Anna has taken back a positive impression of Leicester that the University is engaged and at the forefront of third stream.
