Work to begin on new Barwell community centre

Building work on a new £2 million community centre for Barwell will begin next month.

Residents’ views helped shape the design of the ultra-modern development which will include youth facilities, a sports hall, meeting rooms and a community café.

The George Ward Centre will also be home to Barwell Library, which will move into the building when it opens next spring. The library will be linked to a learning centre, equipped with computers, which will be housed in a room next door.

The project is being run by Leicestershire County Council and will be built by Galliford Try on a site close to the Junior School, near the centre of the village. Work will begin on Monday, August 17.

It will replace The Cedars, a building given to the County Council for community use in 1946 by local benefactor George Ward, which closed in 2002.

The plans are based on a survey of local community needs and have been developed with a group of local people called the George Ward Community Project.

Chairman of the project group Maureen Cook said:  “The centre will provide for a whole range of uses by local groups and individuals.

“We want provide a building that provides something for everyone - somewhere that Barwell people can be proud of. A key part of the building will be a base for young people, so they have their own place to meet and do things.

“We are delighted the building work is starting and we’re looking forward to running it.”

Ernie White, the council’s cabinet member for Better Places, said:

“The new building will give a real boost to the people of Barwell. The County Council has worked hard to overcome many hurdles and fulfil its promise to replace the old Cedars building with a new facility.

“Our partnership with local people in the project group, and the inclusion of the new library area, will ensure it’s a busy centre that Barwell people can be proud of.”

Work is expected to be complete around April 2010.
