Route planner for cyclists launched

A new website will help people plan journeys by bike in Leicester and parts of the county.

www.transportdirect.info allows cyclists to type in their starting point and destination and choose the quickest, quietest or most recreational route.

The results show how long the journey should take and how many miles are involved. Cyclists can also access a map of the route and other information such as the gradient of the journey and how far they will climb in metres.

The areas of Leicestershire currently covered by the website are Leicester and the outskirts - including Oadby, Wigston, Anstey and Birstall - and the Charnwood area, with more routes to be added in the future.

Lesley Pendleton, Leicestershire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation, said: "The new cycle route planner works just the same as a car journey planner.

"It is a great way to get practical information about a journey, and we hope it will encourage people to leave the car at home and get on their bikes.”

Andy Salkeld, Leicester City Council’s cycling officer, said:" Cycling numbers are increasing across central Leicestershire as fast as anywhere else in the UK and this is a great step forward for people wanting to find or create their own bike routes and maps."
