Good Practice in Food Safety Enforcement

Posted on 06/08/09

Charnwood Borough Councils Food Safety Service has been recognised nationally for areas of good practice.

The Food Standards Agency, the FSA, has recently published a report on the use of external contractors within food law services across England. Charnwood Borough Council was one of twenty local authorities that were inspected by the FSA, who looked at how the service is operated in relation to the use of external contractors for food safety inspections.

The FSA highlighted Charnwood Borough Councils Food Safety Team, amongst others, as having areas of good practice. The Council were commended on the annual Service Plan, which details the workloads of the service and how this will be managed. Good practice was also highlighted in the selection and recruitment process, to ensure that competent staff are employed to undertake food safety enforcement work.

All areas of good practice will be shared with other Local Authorities across the Country. A few areas for improvement were also highlighted as part of the inspection, which have already been implemented by the Council.

Full details of the report and the findings can be found on the FSAs web site at: http://www.food.gov.uk/multimedia/pdfs/enforcement/lacontractaudit.pdf

Councillor John Bush (Conservative councillor for Wreake Villages), Lead Member for Housing & Health, said: The Food Safety Team provide an important service to protect members of the public from food poisoning incidents. I am pleased that the FSA have recognised some of the good work undertaken by the Team, which is down to the hard work and professionalism of the officers.

Alan Twells, Head of Environmental Health, said: There are over 1200 Food Businesses within the borough, which are inspected by the Food Safety Team. We continually strive to make improvements and it is great to be recognised that we do provide a good service. Full details of the work undertaken by the Team and Star Ratings for the food businesses we inspect are available on our web site http://www.charnwood.gov.uk/pages/scoresonthedoors .
