Residents in Humberstone are being urged to be extra vigilant after an increase in burglaries in the area.

Over the past 30 days there have been a total of 14 burglaries reported to police in the Hamilton and Humberstone neighbourhood.

Over the next week neighbourhood officers will be posting leaflets through letterboxes in the area to make residents aware of the increase and to reassure them that police are actively targeting possible suspects. The leaflets also contain simple crime prevention advice such as reminding residents to lock their windows and doors every time they leave their home.

PC Martin Sneath, neighbourhood officer for Hamilton and Humberstone said: I would like to reassure residents that neighbourhood officers are actively targeting potential suspects and increasing patrols in the area.

However I am urging residents to help us by being extra vigilant and reporting any suspicious people or vehicles spotted in the area.

I would also urge residents to think about their home security and ensure that they lock all windows and doors every time they leave their home, even if they are just in the back garden.

In many of the burglaries reported, thieves smashed a window or glass panel in a door to gain entry. Items stolen largely comprise of electrical goods such as TVs, games consoles, DVD players and computer equipment, as well as mobile phones, jewellery and cash.
