Council Supports Disabled Sports in Charnwood
Posted on 12/08/09
As the Special Olympics in Leicester comes to a close, disability sport is alive and well in Charnwood.
The Council is backing a number of schemes to ensure that the Borough continues to develop sporting success.
Coaches from Charnwood Borough Council run an adult disability sport session every Monday from 11.30am 12.30pm during school terms at Loughborough University, and numbers have been steadily increasing over the past few months.
There are also two inclusive sports clubs operating from schools in Charnwood and they provide weekly opportunities for young people aged 8 16 years old. The Shepshed Dolphin Swimming Group have recently held the very popular Have a Go Day of Sports at the Hind Leys campus and the good weather attracted hundreds of people who came to try out a huge range of different sports.
Also, Charnwood Sports Council through the Charnwood Grants Panel provided talent support grants to four athletes who have been competing at the Special Olympics.
Kirk Limmage won a Silver medal in the Swimming, Steve Lyne received a Bronze and Silver Medal also in the Swimming and a 4th position ribbon. Miriam Lyne was Captain of the Netball team and lead her team very well to achieve Bronze medals. This was Miriams fifth and last Special Olympics.
Peter Lewis said, Im anxious to ensure that the widest access is available to all as a right, not as a favour.
Sportspeople can inspire us all in meeting the challenges each sport demands none more so than in the Special Olympics.
I especially want to see Charnwood as one of the top authorities in the UK in its provision for disability sport and sporting successes, and am hugely grateful to our coaches, the University, the two clubs in schools or the Shepshed Dolphin Swimming Club for working so hard towards this dream.
Lets look beyond the next Olympics in 2012, and aim now for Olympics 2016!
