Thumbs up for recycling sites
Posted on 14/08/09
Highways, Transportation & Waste Management
A new survey reveals a massive proportion of residents are happy with Leicestershire's recycling and household waste sites.
Mori figures show that 95% of people are satisfied with the County Council facilities where residents can take a range of household items to recycle, including electrical goods, scrap metal, clothes and garden waste, as well as general rubbish.
The poll, carried out this spring, also asked residents to comment on different elements - cleanliness, location, opening hours, recycling facilities, helpfulness of staff and how user-friendly the sites are and indicates that around nine out of 10 users are pleased with these.
Every year, the 14 sites handle more than 100,000 tonnes of materials and 67 per cent of this is recycled or re-used.
The number of old electrical products collected for recycling rocketed earlier this year following a campaign urging people to drop off small unwanted products such as toasters and kettles.
Brand new canopies introduced at Market Harborough, Barwell, Loughborough and Oadby are also helping Leicestershire residents recycle whatever the weather.
Tony Kershaw, County Council Cabinet Member for Waste, said: "These results show how hard we have been working, together with our on-site operators, to improve both the facilities and customer service at local sites.
"In my Cabinet role, I have visited most sites and found them all providing excellent service and am very pleased with the results of the survey."
At this time of year, all sites are open from 8am until 8pm, seven-days-a-week.
