Zebra crossings earning their stripes

Burbage residents are set to benefit from two new zebra crossings in the area.
The new crossings are in Brookside and Church Street, close to the library.
The £26,000 scheme in Brookside is close to sheltered housing for elderly people. Work includes the new zebra crossing, the widening of the existing pavement to accommodate pedestrians waiting to cross Brookside and the installation of timber bollards at the boundary of the car park to replace the existing concrete bollards.
The scheme will also include new signs to direct pedestrians to Hinckley railway station.
On Church Street, the £22,000 improvements will benefit children crossing the road on their way to Burbage Infant and Junior schools. Users of the library and the nearby shops will also benefit .
The scheme is part of Leicestershire County Council’s ‘Safer Routes to School’ programme, which aims to increase the number of children walking and cycling to school rather than arriving by car.
Lesley Pendleton, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation, said: “The new improvements will assist all local residents, in particular elderly residents of Brookside and children on their journey to school.”
