Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was seriously assaulted in South Wigston.

A 48-year-old man is in a critical condition in hospital following the assault on Tansley Avenue at around 2am in the early hours of this morning. A 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and remains in police custody.

Detectives investigating the assault are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident, or an earlier altercation between two men in the 1852 pub on Station Road, South Wigston.

Detective Inspector Siobhan Ashford, explains: “We know that towards the end of a private party at the 1852 there was an altercation involving two people and a man was ejected from the building.

“We’re looking at the possibility that this incident is linked to the assault on Tansley Avenue.

“We know that there were a lot of people in the pub that night so we’d appeal to anyone who was there on Saturday night into the early hours of Sunday morning who may witnessed this altercation, to please get in touch.

“We’re also keen to speak to anyone who was on Tansley Aveue last night between 1am and 2am. Perhaps you live on the street or you walk along Grove Road or Tansley Avenue to make your way home? Did you see anyone acting suspiciously in the area? Did you see the assault or the events leading up to it? If so we’d been keen to hear from you.”

There is scene preservation in place on Tansley Avenue.
