Earth observation experts gather in city for conference
Posted on 17/08/09
University of Leicester
The University of Leicester is hosting a major international conference on the latest scientific developments in Earth observation and photogrammetry from 8-11th September 2009.
The conference, organised by the University on behalf of the UKs Remote Sensing and Photogrammetric Society (RSPSoc) will address a number of hot topics and relevant issues such as deforestation, forest deforestation and fire mapping, detecting carbon from space, natural hazards, education and sensor technology.
Organiser, Dr. Kevin Tansey of the Department of Geography says, Im sure most people are familiar with Google Earth. This conference is about extending the utility of the images like those within Google Earth, extracting real information from the images and interpreting the information about features in the image remotely.
The conference was last held in Leicester in 2000. However, Dr. Tansey explained why it was the right time to host the conference again in 2009; Leicester is a great place to host RSPSoc 2009. We are home to the UKs National Space Centre, the University of Leicester is home to the Space Research Centre which brings together research in physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering and geography. There is also a strong research team in Earth Observation at De Montfort University. Colleagues are also members of the National Centres in Earth Observation and in Instrumentation.
The conference will host a number of influential people, including the Director-General of the Ordnance Survey, Dr. Vanessa Lawrence and Dr. Mark Doherty of the European Space Agency. Over 20 companies are represented at the conference and we are organising networking events for academics and business leaders to discuss how they can work together more. There is also a recruitment event as opportunities in industry and Universities remains strong Dr. Tansey added.
A number of supporters of the event have pledged donations to offset the carbon produced by delegates attending the conference. This money will be given to the Leicester City Council 10,000 trees project to support their tree planting activities.
The conference web page is: www.rspsoc2009.org
