Officers are appealing for witnesses after a distraction burglary in Melton.

The incident happened at around 11.30am on Wednesday August 12, 2009 when the 64-year-old victim received a knock on her door on Nottingham Road from a man claiming to be working for the water board.

The victim let the man inside but when she challenged him a few minutes later asking him for some identification, he left.

He returned shortly with another man but the victim refused to let them in if they could not prove where they were from.

The men claimed their identification was in their van and left turning into Clumber Street.

Nothing was stolen in the incident.

The first suspect is described as white, aged between 35 and 42-years-old, around 57 tall, of slim build with short brown hair. He was wearing a denim jacket, jeans and boots.

The second suspect is described as white, aged between 40 and 50-years-old, around 57 tall, of large build with brown hair. He was wearing a scruffy white shirt and brown shoes.

Both men spoke with an Irish accent.

PC Majud Hussain, who is investigating the incident, said: I would appeal to anyone who was in the area on this Wednesday morning to think back. It may be that they saw something which at the time seemed insignificant but may be of vital importance to the enquiry. I would also ask anyone who had two men of a similar description calling at their home to get in touch.

"Thankfully the victim did the right thing by asking these men for ID as there is no such thing as the water board. A genuine caller will always have ID and will not mind you checking it or will be happy to make an appointment and return at a later date or time. If you do answer the door to a stranger always put the chain on first and if you are in any doubt dial 999 and contact the police."

Anyone with information is asked to contact PC 2861 Majud Hussain on 0116 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for an officer and when prompted key in her identification number 2861. Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous, on 0800 555 111.
