Students Rack Up Record Results

Leicestershire's young people are celebrating after notching-up record post-16 results.

The figures, which are provisional at this stage, look set to be the County's best ever and show that most schools have reported rises.

They reveal that the average points score is expected to increase for each student as well as for each qualification and that Leicestershire will remain above the national average and compare well with 'like authorities' - these have a similar socio-economic profile.

Several schools have also recorded their highest ever scores including: Burleigh Community College, Countesthorpe Community College, Rawlins Community College and Bosworth Community College.

Results need to be confirmed by the Department for Children, Schools and Families and will not be available in published performance tables until the new year.

Ivan Ould, Cabinet Member for the Children and Young People's Service, said: "These are excellent results and I'd like to congratulate students and teachers on their achievements. I'm delighted that so many schools have reported record figures and hope that they enable students to follow their chosen career path."

The results of GCSE exams taken by around 8,000 students in Leicestershire schools will also be released on Thursday (27th August).

The County's results have been rising steadily over the past few years and are in the top third nationally. Last year, they increased by around 4% compared to 2007 and were once again above the national average.

Students who need guidance after receiving their results should seek help firstly from their own schools or colleges where staff will available to give advice on different options available. Connexions can also provide further advice either through schools and colleges or local Connexions centres.

Ivan Ould said: "GCSEs are an important milestone for young people and staff who have worked extremely hard."

"I hope that students waiting for their GCSE results achieve the grades they need and I wish them the best of luck for the next stage of their education, employment or training."
