Facelift for Watermead paths
Posted on 25/08/2009
Highways, Transportation & Waste Management
Two kilometres of paths have now been improved as part of Watermead Country Park’s £1.4 million Connect2 project.
The most recent section to be completed is 900m of resurfaced and widened pathway which link Thurmaston to Birstall via the new bridge at Thurmaston lock.
The boost is part of the £1.4 million Sustrans Connect2 project aimed at improving access on foot and by bike.
Over the next five years, the County Council will be improving more paths to link surrounding villages to the park and into the city’s well established cycling network. Other improvements will include new crossings at busy roads and alterations to several bridges in the park.
Lesley Pendleton, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation, said: “The improved paths will complement the recently completed bridge at Thurmaston and will help people travel between the two villages on a pleasant off-road route.”
Watermead Country Park will be one of the designated starting points for Skyride Leicester on 30th August. Cyclists can join the ride at King Lear’s Lake Car Park, between 10am and 4pm. Guide lead rides will leave on the hour until 2pm.
