Find out more about plans for mine

People can find out more about plans for an open cast mine in North West Leicestershire at a public meeting next month.

At the event, residents can hear about UK Coal's proposal to extract 1,250,000 tonnes of coal and 250,000 tonnes of fireclay at the Minorca site between Measham and Swepstone.

People will also be able to speak to officers and County Councillors, ask questions and look at copies of the planning application.

The meeting, arranged by the County Council, will take place at 7pm on Thursday, 17th September at St. Laurence Church Hall, Main Street, Measham.

People can look at the application and supporting environmental statement by:

  • logging on to the County Council’s website at www.leics.gov.uk (go to Environment & Waste section)
  • visiting County Hall, North West Leicestershire District Council offices in Coalville, Measham and Ashby de la Zouch libraries or Measham Community Offices where hard copies are available

Copies have also been sent to Measham, Snarestone and Swepstone Parish Councils, the Minorca Opencast Protest group and UK Coal’s Long Moor site near Ravenstone.

Residents can submit comments on the proposal until Friday, 2nd October 2009.

The County Council's Development Control and Regulatory Board is due to discuss the application in the autumn.

For more information about the Board meetings, please see the County Council's website (www.leics.gov.uk - go to the Your Council section) or contact the committee officer, Jenny Bailey, on 0116 3056225.
