Loughborough community project receives Olympic recognition

A project led by Loughborough College and supported by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) National Centre for Physical Activity and Health at Loughborough University has been awarded the Inspire mark by the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG).
Loughborough Flames: Lighting the Way is designed to improve the health of young people in Loughborough and is one of only two projects in the East Midlands and 17 nationwide to receive the much sought after Inspire mark.
The project is at the forefront of creating an innovative and exciting Olympic Games health legacy for members of the local community.
Staff from the BHF National Centre, which is part of the Universitys School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences, have delivered training for 100 Loughborough College students to help them encourage children to be more physically active, improve their health and be part of the health legacy of the 2012 Games.
The Colleges 100 young leaders have since delivered a six week programme to 250 local primary school children across the town which culminated in the Loughborough Flames Festival - an Olympics-inspired event that celebrated the childrens achievements.
Sonia McGeorge, Co-Director of the BHF National Centre, is delighted the programme has achieved recognition from LOCOG.
Its a great honour for both ourselves and the College that the Loughborough Flames project has received the Inspire mark, she said. Hosting the Olympic Games is a once in a lifetime experience and we are passionate that as many people as possible across the UK are able to benefit from that, starting with Loughborough.
Loughborough already has good sporting links with the Games and to be able to offer a lasting health legacy, spread the cultural messages of the Games and teach schoolchildren about the Olympic history whilst getting the town excited about 2012 is a brilliant prospect.
We hope to engage more children in the programme year on year and are looking at how it can be rolled out in other communities and towns across the country.
London 2012s Inspire programme aims to help bring the benefits of the 2012 Games to every part of the UK - giving millions the opportunity to participate as never before. Only the most accessible, participative, inspiring and stimulating projects and events achieve the Inspire mark.
The College is one of the first further education establishments in the country to achieve the mark.
