Just what plants were popular at the time? Just what were the gardens used for were they purely for pleasure or where they working features too?

What hidden meanings and secrets were contained in the planting schemes and plants themselves? Were the gardens designed to imitate a paradise on earth, a lost Eden?

Links to the Virgin Mary, Unicorns and roses were all typical of the medieval garden design as enclosed spaces full of spiritual significance to the medieval mind.
