First ever Year 10 students at two Melton schools

The first ever Year 10 students will be studying at Long Field School and John Ferneley College in Melton Mowbray this term.

It is the first time that both schools will have a full year group starting to study for their GCSEs.

The two schools are changing their age range from 11-14 to 11-16 as part of the £45 million reorganisation of schools in Melton Mowbray and the Vale of Belvoir.  This aims to raise standards of attainment and achievement by students in the area.

Students at Long Field and John Ferneley will no longer need to transfer school at age 14 – a transition which some students can find difficult.

These are very exciting times for students at both schools.  Long Field School is being refurbished and will have a brand new Year 7 base and sports hall, which is planned to open in January, 2010.  A brand new John Ferneley College is also being built on the existing school site, which is due to open Easter, 2010.

Rob Garrett, head teacher at Long Field School, said: “We are delighted that our students can now stay at the school and study for their GCSEs.  We will have fantastic new facilities and a broad curriculum for our students.”

Chris Robinson, head teacher at John Ferneley College, said: “This term is the start of a fantastic new era for us.  We have a wide curriculum with a range of GCSE subjects and our brand new building is under construction.  These are tremendously exciting times for students, staff and everyone associated with the college.”
