Discover local natural history collections

People are being invited to join an illustrated talk about the local natural history collections of Leicestershire County Council’s Museum Service.

The introductory evening aims to illustrate the breadth of these collections, which reflect the landscape, flora and fauna of the county. It is the latest free event in the Discover like Darwin programme.

The talk by Senior Curator of Natural Life Carolyn Holmes will be held on Tuesday, 15th September at Holly Hayes Environment and Heritage Resources Centre, in Birstall.

Ernie White, Leicestershire County Council Member for Museums, said: “People often enquire about what collections Leicestershire County Council Museums holds.

"It is not easy to answer this in a short, snappy response. The Museum Collections have been accumulated over the past 160 years and continue to grow. Leicestershire Museum Service has over half a million biological specimens, within the natural history collections.

"This event will illustrate the nature of our collections, how they are cared for, their use and value to people, locally and nationally. This evening will provide just a snapshot, but will serve to illustrate how the Natural Life Collections offer a wealth of inspiration."

To book a free place on the lecture, which starts at 7.30pm, or for more information on the Discover like Darwin programme, please call 0116 3053726, email museums@leics.gov.uk or visit www.leics.gov.uk/darwin
