Beacon Hill celebrates Green Flag status! Photo opportunity: Beacon Hill Country Park in Woodhouse Eaves is celebrating after once again being recognised as one of the finest parks in the Country.

This is the fourth year in which the park has been awarded the Green Flag. To mark this achievement, Roger Wilson, the Chairman of Leicestershire County Council, will present the park’s rangers with the much sought-after Green Flags to fly in the park. The presentation is taking place on Sunday 13th September at 10am. (photographers should make their way to the lower car park at Beacon Hill).

Judges were impressed with how well the park is managed, and the excellent amenities. They also commended the park on its good work with schools and volunteers, and the green energy system which provides electricity at the top car park.

Amongst the continuing work at Beacon Hill are notable highlights such as:

  • Restoration work on the rare heathland habitat
  • Work to reveal more of the bronze age hill fort, outstanding geology, and the panaromic views of the surrounding countryside
  • Dedicated cycle and horse-riding circuit which has been completed over the past year and is already being well-used.
  • Sound-boxes around the Native Tree Collection that feature poems written and recorded by local school children.

The park is also re-knowned for its excellent Wood Fair which is now in its fifth year and this year had over 4,000 visitors. The event promotes sustainable forestry and woodland leisure, showcases wood crafts and products and celebrates all aspects of wood, with fun activities and local food.

Roger Wilson, the Chairman of the County Council, said:

"The Green Flag Award recognises how good our parks are in Leicestershire. Beacon Hill provides excellent events, education and information for the visiting public and all the rangers work hard to ensure that it is an enjoyable place for people to visit. Well done to everyone at Beacon Hill."
