New walk steams ahead

A ride on a steam train and then a ramble back across the fields is being offered in a special walk with a difference.

The event, which will take place on Saturday, September 26, has been made possible thanks to a new partnership between Charnwood Borough Council and the Great Central Railway.

The day will begin at Rothleys Great Central Railway Station where participants will take the train to Loughborough. Following a four mile walk across the fields to Quorn, there will then be the opportunity to enjoy refreshments at the Ellis Tea Room.

Afterwards walkers have the option of either resting their tired legs by catching the train back to Rothley Station, where more refreshments will be on offer, or mustering together their energy and walking the rest of the way.

Walk leader, Natalie Warrington, said: This is going to be a totally new type of walk for people to come along to as it involves a train ride to Loughborough and then a walk back over the fields.

We have been able to negotiate a train ticket price of only 5, which is a considerable discount of less than half price on the normal costs which we anticipated when our walk brochure came out.

With the help of staff and volunteers from Great Central Railway, we are sure to have a great walk.

Peter Lewis, Cabinet Lead Member for Culture and Leisure at Charnwood Borough Council, said: It is wonderful we have secured this partnership with the Great Central Railway.

This is an excellent chance to experience a truly unique organised walk.

Not only do people get the chance to enjoy the charm and the nostalgia of the steam railway, but there is also the opportunity to walk across country and get a real feel for the Charnwood landscape.

No booking is necessary, but walkers are advised to turn up before the start time of 9.45am to ensure they leave on time.
