ONE IN THREE PEOPLE FEEL CONSUMER RIGHTS ARE IGNORED

Posted on 14/09/09
newsdesk

One in three people feel their consumer rights have been ignored and over a quarter of people (28%) are more likely to complain about goods they bought during the economic downturn according to a new survey.

The results of the survey, commissioned by the Department for Business, were released at the launch of the Know Your Consumer Rights campaign - a major new drive backed by Consumer Direct to support consumers and help them understand their rights.

Other highlights from the survey of 2,000 people include:

People aged 35 plus feel they are more likely to be overcharged or misled shopping on the high street than on the internet. But those aged between 16 and 34 said the internet posed a greater risk than the high street

31 per cent of women claim they are more likely to complain about goods during the economic downturn compared to 25 per cent of men

58 per cent of consumers claim they have complained to a store about goods, asked for a refund or an exchange between one and three times in the past three years

One third of consumers claim they have complained to a store about goods, asked for a refund or asked for an exchange more than three times in the past three years

The Know Your Consumer Rights campaign is focused on ensuring consumers know three key legal rights:

Goods must fit the description given

Be of satisfactory quality

Be suitable for purpose

Sara Barry, Consumer Direct East Midlands Manager said: Trying to sort out problems with faulty or misdescribed goods can be incredibly frustrating, but if you seek advice about your rights from Consumer Direct, you will often find you're entitled to a refund, repair or replacement.

We want to empower consumers by giving them the knowledge, tools and confidence to resolve their problems themselves. We hope this campaign will make people more aware of their rights as consumers and if they do experience problems with products or services theyve bought, know where they can go for help and advice when they need it.

People wanting to test their consumer rights knowledge for a chance to win 150 of shopping vouchers can enter the online quiz at www.consumerdirect.gov.uk

Shoppers can also benefit from helpful consumer tips whilst in their local shopping centre. Staff from Consumer Direct East Midlands and Trading Standards will be in the following shopping centres:

Wednesday 16th September in the west piazza, near New Look, in the Grosvenor Shopping Centre, Northampton

Friday 18th September Beaumont Shopping Centre, Beaumont Leys, Leicester

Saturday 19th September in the food court at Fosse Park, Leicester

Friday 25th September in the food court at East Midlands Designer Outlet (McArthur Glen), near junction 28 of the M1

Friday 2nd October Waterside Shopping Centre, Lincoln

If you cant visit the Consumer Direct stand at your local shopping centre, you can always get clear, practical advice by calling 08454 04 05 06 anytime between 8am and 6.30pm Monday to Friday, and 9am till 1pm on Saturdays.
