Bus & bike improvements for busy route

One of the busiest routes into the city will undergo £200,000 improvements in a bid to reduce congestion.

Approximately 30,000 vehicles use the A6 (London Road) between Asda and the city boundary every day.

Leicestershire County Council carries out improvements to cut congestion and encourage more people to take the bus or cycle.

A 24 hour bus lane will be introduced (for city centre bound buses) and sections of the road will be resurfaced at the same time to reduce accidents and minimise disruption to the public. Over the following 6 months, the public will have the opportunity to comment on the new bus lane.

There will also be a big improvement in cycling facilities – existing footpaths will be widened or converted to be shared used paths for both cyclists and pedestrians.

Lesley Pendleton Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation said, “The A6 is a very busy route, at all times of day and we hope that these new measures will reduce congestion for city bound traffic and encourage people to cycle or take the bus. ”

Work on the improvements will begin in mid September and is expected to be completed this winter.

The programming of the works has been designed to ensure that any disruption will be kept to a minimum, taking account of City Council road works on Palmerston Way.
