Guided walk showcases old Charnwood, the new National Forest and brand new footpath

A scenic footpath only recently opened to the public features in a guided walk exploring the traditional Charnwood countryside and the new National Forest woodland.

Peter Williams, Head of Leicestershire County Council’s Environmental Management Group, is leading the walk on Saturday, September 26.

Mr Williams has been involved with the National Forest since the project first started. He is also overseeing plans for a Charnwood Forest Regional Park, and is knowledgeable about the history and wildlife of the area.

The steadily-paced ten mile walk explores the traditional landscape of the Ulverscoft valley, contrasting with new plantations near Bradgate Park and Woodhouse Eaves. The route includes a very scenic new footpath which was opened in July for the public to enjoy.

The walk starts at 10am on Saturday 26th September from the upper Beacon Hill car park. Places are limited so booking is essential by telephoning 0116 305 8790.

The cost is adults £3, children and concessions £2 or families £8. Car parking at Beacon Hill is £1.50 per day. Participants should bring a packed lunch. Families are welcome, as are dogs on short leads. Binoculars are recommended.

The walk includes some stiles and steep sections and can be muddy in places. People should wear suitable footwear and bring waterpoof clothing.

Ernie White, County Council Cabinet member for the Countryside Service, said: "Leicestershire is an excellent county for walking – there’s no better way to explore the gorgeous countryside, beautiful wildlife and historic features in our landscape. The Charnwood Forest is an area particularly worth exploring."

The walk is specially arranged for the Leicestershire Walking Week from 19th-27th September 2009. For more information see www.leics.gov.uk/walkingweek
